STUDENT GROUP HOLDS TEACH-IN ON ANIMAL RESEARCH:
International campaign against U.S. investment firm, Stephens Inc., discussed.

AUSTIN- On Wednesday, October 24, from 11:15 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on the West Mall, Students Against Cruelty to Animals will hold a teach-in to educate people about Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) and Stephens Inc.

Stephens Inc. is a Little Rock, Arkansas investment firm that bailed out one of the world’s largest animal experimentation laboratories, HLS, with a $33M loan earlier this year.

HLS operates three labs in the U.S. and England testing toxicity of herbicides, pesticides and household products, killing 500 animals a day.

Because of this investment, several animal rights groups have united in a campaign against Stephens Inc.  A national protest is being held this Monday, Oct. 29, at the corporate headquarters of Stephens Inc. in Little Rock.

Feeling the effects of this campaign, they have filed a lawsuit against many of these animal rights groups and have urged the City Council in Little Rock to pass resolutions limiting the ways these groups can protest.  But Stephens Inc. claim that they “respect their right to lawfully protest.”

This backlash by Stephens Inc. is one of the topics that will be discussed on Wednesday along with background on both of these companies.

The group Students Against Cruelty to Animals had success last fall in liberating Stampy, a Beagle recently experimented on at the UT Animal Resources Center. Nine members of this student group will join an Austin delegation to the national protest of Stephens Inc.
