RELEASE STUDENTS PROTEST UT KILLING OF BEAGLES AUSTIN- Through an arrangement
with an Austin corporation, the UT Animal Resources Center has housed
and killed two Beagles for profit this year, and only one remains. As
time runs out for the last Beagle, nicknamed “Stampy,” students will
gather for a rally and teach-in
on Tuesday,Dec. 5, from 11:30-1:30 on the West Mall of the UT campus. Students Against Cruelty to Animals has issued a proposal to the ARC, calling for
an end to the housing and research on dogs at the University. The Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committee will vote on the proposal at their Dec.
12 meeting. A private corporation, CEDRA of Austin,
pays the UT Animal Resources Center to house and then kill Beagles for
their organs. CEDRA uses the organs to create cell cultures, which they
sell for between $150 and $450 each.
SACA
is the UT animal rights organization that has been visiting the Beagles
regularly this semester. The purpose of SACA is to educate and mobilize
students on animal rights issues. In addition to the ARC Campaign, SACA
has also worked to increase dorm cafeteria options for vegans and vegetarians. -30- |
