STUDENT GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS
AUSTIN- Student Government of the University of Texas is calling on UT administration
to save the life of Stampy,
a Beagle currently housed in the Animal Resources Center on campus.
The resolution, which passed
overwhelmingly Tuesday, also encouraged the use of alternatives to
animal research, and an end to the euthanasia of animals for profit.
Randy Ortega, Liberal Arts representative, worked with members of Students Against Cruelty to Animals to
draft the resolution.
Student Government officials
will now present the resolution to President
Faulkner, who happens to own a Beagle.
Through an arrangement with
an Austin corporation, CEDRA, the ARC has housed and killed two Beagles
for profit this year. Only Stampy remains.
Students Against Cruelty to Animals has issued a proposal to the ARC, calling for
an end to the housing and research on dogs at the University. The
ARC board will vote on the proposal at their Dec. 12 meeting.
Because of these developments,
an organizer for SACA received a harassing email from an anonymous
UT researcher Wednesday, alleging that animal rights activists pose
a threat to his/her life.
