Veg at UT:

Here are some tips from SACA members on finding veg food if you live in a dorm, or if you are looking for a meal near campus.

Eating veg with a meal plan:

If youˆ¢re eating in one of the dorm cafeterias like Jester or Kinsolving itˆ¢s easy to see which foods are vegetarian and vegan. The food being served has a color-coded nutrition panel accompanying it. If this panel is green that indicates a vegan dish. If this panel is white it includes dairy in it, but no meat (lacto-ovo vegetarian).

If you eat in downstairs Jester, there are a few options. Here is a listing of the lines that offer vegetarian and vegan food:

Green Belt: all vegetarian and mostly vegan but the problem is that itˆ¢s not open very often. When the line is open they serve things like soy and tofu stuffed shells, fake hot wings, veggies, bread,Veggie burgers, and sometimes they even offer a vegan grilled cheese.

Oriental line: they have limited selection. Some days they serve a tofu stir-fry with rice or veggie eggrolls.

Mexican line: if youˆ¢re vegetarian you can pick up a cheese quesadilla here. They also have beans and that's about it.

Sandwich line: here you can have them make you any kind of sandwich. They have tofu egg salad sometimes, but donˆ¢t count on it. If there is no tofu egg salad the only other option is a Veggie Sandwich.

There are a few other lines that offer typical American food and they have French fries, onion rings, mashed potatoes, and assorted Veggies.

In the cooler you can buy an individual-size soy milk (if you want to eat cereal),or get some Amyˆ¢s frozen foods. Thereˆ¢s a soup and salad bar also, but itˆ¢s usually not that fresh. You can also get some food at Cypress Bend: They have a grill where you can get Fries, onion rings, or a grilled cheese. They also have a counter that offers spaghetti and Veggie Sandwiches. This place also sells snacks like cookies and chips.

Eating veg near campus:

Burger King: there is a Burger King located in the Business school (across from the PCL). They have a new veggie burger (the bun is not vegan, though).

Campus Store (located in Jester dorm): You can get a vegan tofu salad sandwich and that's the best thing they offer. They have all the typical junk food too.

Veggie Heaven: Right across from Dobie Mall, this is one of the most popular vegetarian restaurants in Austin. Nearly everything is vegan. It is slighly more expensive, though ($6 and up, plus tip).

Thai Noodles Etc.: Located on the Drag behind 7-11. A lot of soups at Madam Mam's aren't actually vegetarian, so this is a good alternative for Thai food.

Dobie Mall:
Hoa Hoa: Various vegan and vegetarian dishes for about $5. The tofu dishes (all vegan) are listed separately from the rest of the menu. The garlic tofu and the black bean tofu are great!

Star Over India: Lots of vegan Indian food around $5- $6. Some of their dishes are very spicy, so beware.
